- SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 10, 1991 -- SynOptics Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:SNPX),
- of Santa Clara, Calif., today reinforced its commitment to personal computer
- workgroup networks with the introduction of a 10BASE-T Ethernet transceiver for
- Apple Macintosh computers. SynOptics' Model 518 10BASE-T Transceiver was
- developed for the newly announced Apple Attachment Unit Interface (AAUI) to
- provide a direct connection to industry-standard 10 megabit-per-second 10BASE-T
- Ethernet.
- The transceiver was developed in a cooperative effort with Apple Computer t
- support its Ethernet Cabling System, which is being unveiled here at MacWorld
- Exposition. Apple is demonstrating the Model 518 transceiver and SynOptics'
- Model 2800 10BASE-T Workgroup Concentrator in its booth. The concentrator is
- serving as the network hub in Apple's 10BASE-T Ethernet demonstration and the
- transceiver provides connectivity between Macintosh computers and the network
- hub.
- "SynOptics is broadening the connectivity options of Apple's Macintosh
- workgroups by delivering high-performance 10BASE-T Ethernet networking as an
- option to LocalTalk networking," said William A. Lanfri, vice president of
- business development. "SynOptics sees this as an excellent opportunity to
- partner with Apple and leverage our expertise as the leading supplier of
- 10BASE-T Ethernet systems."
- In addition, SynOptics recently announced a strategy to provide network
- solutions for the installed base of Macintosh computers using Apple's LocalTalk
- media access method. In November 1990, SynOptics and Farallon Computing of
- Emeryville, Calif., announced their intent to enter into a long-term joint
- product development and technology exchange agreement. Under this agreement,
- SynOptics will incorporate Farallon's patented PhoneNET technology for
- Macintosh computers into SynOptics' LattisNet System 3000 networking platform.
- Macintosh network managers also have the ability to monitor and diagnose
- 10BASE-T Ethernet networks with SynOptics' 2000-series workgroup concentrators.
- Using SynOptics' Basic Network Management application, network managers can
- maximize the performance and reliability of the network through a sophisticated
- monitoring and control system.
- The Model 518 10BASE-T Transceiver sells for $135 and will be available in
- February. It includes a cable interface to the AAUI and one RJ-45 connector
- which is used to connect directly to 10BASE-T link segments.
- SynOptics Communications, Inc. designs, manufactures and markets local area
- networking products based on its Network Utility Architecture, a value-added
- product strategy which incorporates network connectivity, internetworking and
- network management solutions into an integrated networking environment. The
- company is headquartered at 4401 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara, Calif.,
- 95052.
